25 Years of Serving Those in Greatest Need in Utah
Volunteers of America, Utah is celebrating 25 years of service in Utah this year. The agency was open in the early 1900’s here in Utah then closed for a while. They re-opened in 1986 with an Adult Detox Facility. The facility, located at 252 West Brooklyn Street, helps homeless and low income, men and women start the process of recovery. Detoxification is the first step in helping someone move toward a life of sobriety. Over the years this facility has helped thousands of people.
Char McQuaig, Program Manager explains,“Substance Abuse in our community is an overwhelming problem for many people. Treatment for substance abuse is still very much out of the reach of the everyday person, let alone our homeless or low income population. If you are fortunate enough to have insurance, it may not offer help with substance abuse issues. Without the social model detoxification center and Salt Lake Counties generous funding, many would never get an opportunity to examine their substance abuse issues or discover what it is like to be safe while going through the difficult withdrawals coming off of their drug of choice.” Click here to go to our Detoxification Service page.
Once the detox facility was open Volunteers of America, Utah was off and running again and has had a reputation for excellence ever since. The addition of the Homeless Outreach Program, the Center for Women and Children. The Homeless Youth Resource Center, Seniors Corps Services and most recently, Cornerstone Counseling Center comes with a lot of responsibility. VOA does it all with care and compassion.
